                                  Firefighter/Paramedic-Career
                                              City of Monona

              Entry Level Firefighter/EMT-P

              FILING DEADLINE: 4:00 PM, November 18, 2011

              PURPOSE 
              To establish eligibility lists of qualified candidates to fill future vacancies. Eligibility list will be good for a two year period starting January 1st, 2012 and ending December 31, 2013.

              HOW TO APPLY
              Applications are available at the Monona City Hall. Applications can also be obtained online @ www.mymonona.com and www.mononafire.com.  A completed, signed, application must be filed at the business office before the deadline. Applications must be delivered or mailed. Faxed or scanned applications will not be accepted. Only original applications that have not been altered will be accepted. Please submit copies of the following documents with your application: Cover letter, resume, high school diploma or GED, Wisconsin Firefighter 1 certification or equivalent, Wisconsin or National Registry Paramedic license, all certifications / degree’s listed on resume / application. Job offers will only be made to applicants with Wisconsin Firefighter I certification or equivalent and current National Registered/Wisconsin Licensed Paramedics. Failure to submit any of these documents will result in an incomplete application, which cannot be considered. Applications received after 4:00 PM on November 18, 2011 will not be considered.

              SCREENING PROCESS
              A maximum of 20 applicants will be invited to participate in the oral interviews. These candidates will be selected from the applicant pool based on experience, education, and qualifications. Please make sure to include documentation of all education and/or certifications noted on your application. Undocumented education, certifications, and qualifications will not be counted in final score.

              ORAL INTERVIEW
              Oral interviews will be conducted at the Monona City Hall in front of a panel made up of fire service professionals. Applicants will be advised of the interview date(s) by mail.

              TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
              Candidates who successfully complete the oral interviews will be invited to participate in the technical interviews. In the technical interview, the candidates will be asked to perform in a number of scenarios designed to evaluate his/her Firefighter and EMT skill levels.

              POLICE and FIRE COMMISSION INTERVIEW
              Finalists will be invited to a “Police and Fire Commission Interview” after which the final eligibility list will be made.

              Firefighter / Paramedic General Information

              MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
                              19 years or older, High School Diploma or equivalent. 
                                      Wisconsin Firefighter 1certification or equivalent 
                                      Wisconsin licensed EMT-Paramedic. Job offers will only be made to licensed EMT-Paramedics.
                                      Valid / insurable driver’s license, state of Wisconsin driver’s license within 30 days of hire. 
                                      Able to pass department medical physical based upon NFPA 1582. 
                                      Upon employment, all candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

              PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
              Prior fire suppression, fire inspection and ambulance experience, Associates Degree in Fire Protection or related field, Wisconsin State Fire Inspector certification, Wisconsin Firefighter II certification, Wisconsin Motor Pump Operator certification(s), NIMS ICS Classes, Emergency Vehicle Operations Class certification. A current, less than one year old from date of application deadline, Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) Certificate. Experience working with Volunteers.

              CHARACTER
              Candidate must be of good moral character and integrity. Candidates who are extended conditional offers of employment must agree to an in depth background investigation which may reveal criminal conviction records, emotional problems, or illegal drug use.

              EXAMINATIONS
              Candidates who are extended conditional offers of employment must pass a physical and psychological examination provided by a City of Monona appointed physician. 

              SALARY
              Salary per 2012-2013 Monona FF’s local 311 contract (still to be settled).  Proposed 2011 starting wage $15.82 (subject to negotiation with the representing union).

              HOURS OF WORK
              Work schedule per 2012-2013 Monona FF’s local 311 contract (still to be settled & may be changed).  The scheduled work day shall be twenty-four (24) hours. The uniform work day shall start at 7:00am and end at 7:00am the following day. The scheduled work week shall be one (1) day on, one (1) day off, one (1) day on, one (1) day off, one (1) day on, one (1) day off, one (1) day on, four (4) days off, one (1) day on, one (1) day off, one (1) day on, one (1) day off, one (1) day on, one (1) day off, one (1) day on, six (6) days off (1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-4, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-6) and so on, on a twenty-four (24) day rotating basis, each full-time employee working eight (8) work days every twenty four (24) day period.

              RETIREMENT
              The City of Monona participates in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). New hires are required to contribute employee portion as per Wi State Statute.

              BENEFITS
              The Monona Fire Department provides paid vacation and holidays as per their respective Labor Agreements. Additional benefits include; medical, dental, and life insurance.

              RESIDENCY
              All full-time employees are required to reside within twenty-five (25) miles of the City of Monona.

              REPRESENTATION
              All Firefighters employed by the Monona Fire Department are represented by IAFF Local 311. The City and the Local enjoy a very positive and proactive relationship.
